Medicines, Supplements and Home Remedies: How to Share Everything Safely With Your Doctor

Many of us take more than just prescription medicines—herbal supplements, vitamins, Ayurvedic products, over-the-counter painkillers, home remedies. These can sometimes interact with each other.

When your doctor asks what you’re taking, don’t just mention the “main” medicine. Include:

  • All prescription tablets, syrups, inhalers
  • Vitamins and “general health” supplements
  • Herbal or traditional remedies
  • Frequent painkillers or acidity tablets you buy directly
  • Any weight-loss or gym-related products

You don’t have to feel embarrassed or hide it. The aim isn’t to judge your choices, but to keep you safe.

Some combinations can affect the liver, kidneys, blood clotting or how another medicine works. For example, certain herbal products may thin blood; some supplements affect blood sugar or pressure.

If you’re planning to start a new supplement or alternative therapy, it’s okay to ask your doctor first: “Will this clash with my current medicines?”

Clear communication means fewer surprises, safer treatment, and more trust on both sides.
